However, before making a purchase, it is always a great idea to compare what you have in store for the tool with the features and abilities of the tool. This way, you buy something that can handle the workload without failure. 7 STEPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR MULTITOOL
If you don’t want your multi-tool to be rusted or not opening easily, please follow the guide below to fix and maintain it. Your multi-tool may be different, but you can still follow it.
Firstly, you will need some items:
– 1200/800g Wet-n-Dry rough paper
– Lubricant optionally Teflon based
– A piece of clean dry cloth
– Small container
Now, let’s see how to do.
Step 1: Getting your multi-tool separate
When pulling your multi-tool apart, particularly for the first time, it is necessary to memorize and write down which parts go where. Frankly speaking, if you get them clutter up, it will take you a lot of time to sort the disorder.
I suggest you take out a piece of A4 paper and mark the parts out in sequence. This helps us just keep the parts back into the original.
Start by determining the fixing mechanism’s, which maintain the devices. On my tool, I have four tiny screws… Some models have a swing arm locking mech. Just locate it and remove the locking system.
Step 2: Removing implement stacks
Next, we remove the implement pipes. Before doing this step, we should take a look at the way the finger grips are positioned, how they are stacked, etc. This will be essential when re-gather the piece…
Attend not to untie the space-bar appliances if it is used.
Then take the heap out in 1 section.
Then arrange the tools out in the sequence of the stack.
Note down the numbers on the paper for direction if you need.
When we separate everything, it can be simple to see rust, cover and damage, etc…
Step 3: Removing rust, grime and burrs
Now we will remove rust and things that are not wanted in the tool.
The rush requires particular notice. As my tool is a stainless iron of a steady grade… It still corroded due to a broken basement.
If there are rust or tarnish left in the multi-tool, it is possible to get back very quickly. Therefore, you should remove al of them!
Then take some Wet and Dry rough paper

Just light circles until the rust has lost its “thickness”.

No huge rust/tarnish – 1200g but get two pieces and smooth them together to extract some of the sand… It will turn a little white. Next, use light swirls until you turn it to the stainless. The closer you reach to the shiny stainless the tinier the swirls…. We don’t require to scrape the finished surface.
Step 4: Make smooth
After removing rust, grime and burrs, we must apply some lubrication. So that our Multi-tool will run smoothly and do not draw dust into the tool causing it to size, we need a block…
The thing I examined a long time ago was the Teflon based lube. These worked, but it was nothing spectacular… The thing that appears to be fantastic is bike chain lubricant.
You can use whatever you have but I recommend using Teflon based and NO USE of a grease or oil… These will draw dust and dirt from your hands… Remember that we often have salty sweat in hands while working. That is not good for stainless steel.
Fill a tiny container with it and dip the tools into the lube.
Then remove waste with clean stuff.
Ensure that there is solely a slight cover remaining. If you use a Teflon based lube, it may omit a white film. But don’t bother about this, it will fade off the surface area later.
Soaking the pliers and operating the jaws to let the lubricant penetrate.
Then dry thoroughly.
Step 5: Insert cartridge
After each part has had a whole covering of lubricant and has been dried it is time to assemble the cartridge to go back into the chassis. This is where it is going to pay off, that we labelled and ordered the pieces.
Stack the pack of implements back together and insert back into chassis…
If you are unable to stack it back in one piece, try using the locking bolt/pin and stack them back in one at a time.
Once back inside the unit. Retighten the locking mechanism, but not completely.
We need to dip the end of the cartridge, one more time as an assembled piece.
Once the end of the cartridge is completely saturated, work the implements back and forth till all the lube has penetrated and left a thin layer in between the tools.
Finally, dry end of cartridge totally.
Step 6: Attaching the head/pliers
The next step is to connect the head that in my case is another two of my bolts.Your head may be different but reattach as you took off.
Make sure everything fits inline and is not skewed in the closed case.
Retighten all bolt’s completely. Your will see that the pivoting joint now moves more freely, requiring lightly more tightening of the locking mechanism. This is not a problem because you have removed the grit and grime.
If you have a reasonable Multi-tool that all the plier head requires to function correctly.
Step 7: Polish and you are DONE!
To get it nice and shiny, we should probably give it a bit of polish with some stainless steel polishing compound preferably but standard kitchen polish should do. Make sure not to get any on the cartridge swivel point….
